Seedlings is an excellent charitable organization that sells high-quality braille books and toys for children at a significantly reduced price than typical commercial programs are able to offer due to donor and volunteer support. I have purchased many Seedlings books for myself and have always had a superb experience with both their service and their products. They have a fantastic catalog of UEB titles of various reading levels and interests including many Newberry Award Winner and Honor books. Their website is screen reader friendly and easy to use. Search for books by age range, genre type, or format. Books for beginning braille readers are available with print interlining so visual and tactual readers can enjoy books together. A growing collection of multiple volume, fully contracted, single space books are on offer for more advanced young readers. There is also a small section of gifts and learning toys for preschool aged emergent braille readers. Seedlings offers additional programs and publications all in line with their mission to increase access to literacy for children who are braille readers. Interested in signing your VI child up to receive free (yes FREE) braille books? Check out their Book Angel and Rose Project programs. To learn more about Seedlings’ collection and services, take a few minutes and explore their site.
Each time I have ordered Seedlings’ books, they have arrived in excellent quality and the ordering process is simpler than at other sites due to the HTML style layout. The braille is pristine, and the increased dot-height makes for a much smoother reading experience for me than with other hard copy braille books such as those ordered from The Braille Superstore, the dots of which are often too faint for me personally. I highly recommend Seedlings for any braille reader looking for a frustration-free experience for their next literary adventure (whether you are a child or an adult who loves a good story).
