Can a Blind Person Use an iPhone?

“Once we have accessibility we have possibility. I challenge you to move from making accommodations to making learning accessible to all.” (Mark Coppin, Apple Distinguished Educator)

Did you know that all Apple devices come with built-in features that allow people with various types of disabilities to fully access them? Every single iPhone comes with many optional settings that, when enabled, allow a visually impaired person to use the device successfully – just like anyone else. A low vision user can activate a setting called Zoom which allows the screen to be magnified as large as necessary. Inverted colors mode allows the user to change the screen’s appearance and color scheme to maximize contrast. Totally blind users can turn on Voiceover, a screen reader which will read anything on the screen aloud when commanded. The blind person can move their finger around and hear what’s underneath it, or connect a bluetooth keyboard and use the keys to control their device. Anyone with an iPhone can go into the accessibility settings and activate these features and more for free! I use many of them myself to navigate my own phone effectively. Their seamless integration and ease of use is to be applauded. Though this is only a very brief overview, it at least emphatically answers the question asked above. Can someone who is blind use an iPhone? The answer is a resounding “Yes!” With the right support and training, any visually impaired person can start using an Apple device in less than ten minutes. Way to go Apple!
